Judy is owned and handled by Rose Connell who was also Judy's rescuer. Rose, who is in charge of the Dog Control Unit in Port Elizabeth, received a complaint from someone in the township about a neighbour who had attacked their dog with a hammer for supposedly killing chickens. The bitch had run off leaving her litter of puppies behind in need of help. Rose went to collect the puppies which all but one later died.  Judy was found a couple of days later in a drain. Her feet had been damaged by the hammer blows, one eye was hanging out, the other one damaged and she had been burnt on one side.  She was starving and covered with mange. Rose took her home for the night and put her in a pen, she was going to have her euthanased the following morning. During the night Judy crawled out of her pen and came and lay next to Rose's bed. That did it for Rose and she went all out to save this brave little girl. Unfortunately Judy lost her left eye and had almost no vision in the right eye. Rose nursed her back to health and within three months she was showing condition.  When Judy started showing jealousy when Rose worked with her other dogs she decided to do some training with Judy too. By this time some of the vision had returned in Judy's right eye.  Rose started carting with her and within two years made her into a carting champion. Judy is a dog that carries herself with pride and despite her rough start in life and her physical disabilities is a well adjusted member of Rose's family.
